The first time you open a bottle of champagne can be a little nerve-racking. Do you twist it open carefully and ensure your hand stays over the cork to avoid breaking someone's face? Do you discreetly hand it to your best friend and make them do it? Or do you nudge it up with your fingers and send the cork flying into the air like they do in New Year's Eve commercials? (By the way, the bubbles rarely spill out of the top of the bottle dramatically, and when they do, all you're left with is a huge mess and wasted rosé.) But once you get that bottle open and you hear that "pop," your fear turns into salivation (is that just me??) and everything is ok. Now every time I pop a bottle of bubbly, I feel a sense of sentimentality.
This got me thinking...
How do you start a blog? Do you start it delicately and take your time in building an audience by talking about the things you really care about? Do you leave it to others since they're good at it, and you don't think you will be? Or do you do the expected thing and write about whatever you think people want to hear in hopes of building up a big pile of followers? In my case, I am going with my gut and am going to write about things that I am passionate about:
Throwing a great party or helping my friends plan their weddings // messing around in Adobe Creative Suite to create something beautiful that has nothing to do with my job // talking about food and restaurants in Chicago and the well-thought-out designs these restauranteurs have created // hugging my puppy Bodie a little too tightly because his cuteness just takes over my sense of self-control // drinking bubbles // eating cheese // and fries // and some more cheese
That anxious feeling of doing something uncomfortable for the first time is all rushing back to me. I have never written publicly. I don't have a career in wedding planning, design, food criticism, or wine tasting. I'm not necessarily qualified to speak to the world on any of those things. But I really enjoy all of them. So here's to hoping that my blogging adventure will taste a hell of a lot like a cold flute of sparkling wine and I will enjoy every sip!
Are you a new or experienced blogger? How did you get your start? Is there any advice you can offer me?
